woodlands nursery design

Designing nurseries is always fun, filled with excitement. Being apart of a baby’s first months is an absolute honour. This particular project held an extra special significance for us, on a very personal level.

This project was not only enjoyable to bring to life, from design to implementation, but it was also thrilling to craft a space for my nephew that he could cherish for years to come. Discovering that our extended family was expanding was, to say the least, quite exciting, especially since our only child had been the sole grandchild on my husband’s side for 20 years! Can you believe it? While he may not have a large family, it still feels unbelievable!

The expecting parents had a specific theme in mind that beautifully complemented the exposed brick feature wall, and they entrusted me with the creative design to bring a magically themed woodlands nursery to life. During the design concept phase, we stumbled upon some adorable mountain bookshelf images on Pinterest, creating this little ones very first custom designed bookshelf was exciting, I could picture him kneeled in front reading his favourite book.

I thought I’d share the stages of creating his custom Woodlands Inspired Nursery. We began with a blank canvas—the room was previously used as an anything goes space.

First, we measured and mapped out the layout for the mountain shelves and the painted landscape. Next, we made a quick trip to Bunnings to gather the materials needed for construction. I collected some photo shelves from Ikea that were just perfect for displaying his books, we just need to resize them to the required lengths.

This project was incredibly fun and meaningful for all of us. My husband and the new dad-to-be bonded while building the structure, and we think it was all a little too exciting since the bud decided he’d make an early appearance with Mum going into early stages of labour, thinking we had plenty of time since the due date was still a few weeks away. The original installation schedule went out the window when he arrived healthy and happy four weeks early—kids have a way of changing plans! It certainly makes for a great story to share for years to come.

While Mum and Bub spent the first few days in hospital we continued the process, by painting the mountains in various shades of grey and blue to unify the elements of the little man’s space. Once the paint coats were complete on each mountain top, I taped off the mountain range wall art, painting it in a light green to blend with a natural landscape as well as the curtains, custom wall art, amongst other features in the room.

To add depth to the top of the wall, we installed some 3D cloud shapes above the mountains, which completed the look perfectly.

Finished off with thoughtful styling pieces, framed custom wall art design from Etsy encapsulated the design perfectly, complete with his own little nook for reading, cuddling, and bonding with family. The charming woodland characters truly make this room feel alive.

To top it all off, we added a touch of snow to the mountain tops, after all, would it really be complete without it?

I couldn’t resist including a shot of their beloved fur baby “Penny”, patiently waiting for him to arrive home.
